My Birthday
Today is my birthday - whee! And incredibly I'm still 39! (thank you Jack Benny wherever you are *g*)
We celebrated it this morning by going to the town dump. A few years ago we celebrated it by going to a memorial service for a friend's grandmother. I've learnt to expect the unexpected on my visits.
Yesterday we arose at the crack of dawn so we could make it to the Lowell Memorial Auditorium by 10 to witness a friend become an American citizen. It was gloomy and rainy and we didn't make it to the Auditorium until 10:30. However the judge was delayed so it didn't start until 12:15 - if we'd known I could've stayed in bed longer *grumbles*. There were about several hundred people who became citizens in a ceremony that was both moving and horribly boring in parts (forget abut the waiting almost 2 hours part). We all sang the "Star-Spangled Banner" and I actually remembered the words (it's been decades since I've sung it) and at the end, listening to "God Bless America" I got a little teary and resentful at the line "stand beside her and guide her" as God has done such a lousy job by guiding so many of us to Dubya recently.
My birthday present to me is to upgrade my lj to a Plus Account so I can add 9 more icons (GreatestJournal lets me have 2000 and sent me a birthday greeting - tell me again why are we all on lj?)

Me, I'm heading for 46 and I don't care who knows it. I earned this, dammit!
I may smack the next 20-year-old who simpers "I don't like telling how old I am". Though I might just say, "I think he's asking so he knows if you're legal to fuck or not."

It is sort of silly as my birthdate is in my userinfo but this is what contemporary society does to us - makes age something to dread. I always keep in mind Gertrude Steins' adage that "We are always the same age inside."
