Me & BtVS

The other day someone on lj asked for tales about how others got into fandom. My post was lost so I decided to write my story here.

Me & BtVS

I've been watching "BtVS" since its premiere on March 10, 1997 (has it really been that long?). I was a fan of SMG since she appeared on AMC. I knew of ASH since he was in those Taster's Choice commercials and I love vampires. I saw every episode the first time it was on either sitting there as it aired or watching a tape I'd made. I didn't love it enough to watch it in summer re-runs until S5. In "Checkpoint" ep 5.12 which aired 1/23/01, there's a scene where Buffy, desperate to protect Joyce and Dawn, takes them to Spike as he's the only other person in Sunnydale who might be strong enough to protect them from Glory. He starts out snarking but once he realizes the seriousness of it, he rises to the occasion. That's the moment I fell in love with Spike.

I started reading the fanfics that fall in S6, concentrating on Spuffy. I was thrilled when they consumated their relationship in "Smashed" ep 6.09 but then in "Wrecked" and in subsequent eps, the relationship deteriorated until I believed that Buffy was no longer worthy of Spike (see Kristen's Letter to ME) . That was the end of Spuffy for me. I tried Spangel as the vampiric sire/childe relationship made sense to me but I grew tired of it after awhile as Spike was often depicted behaving childishly. I was also reading some pro stuff about BtVS and in Reading the Vampire Slayer, edited by Roz Kaveney, in a chapter titled "Staking a Claim: the series and its slash fan-fiction" by Esther Saxey, there was what was probably my first exposure to the notion of Spander: "Xander realised that Spike was testing the limits; when he began to suckle one of Xander's nipples, he grinned, but when he tightened his teeth around it, the vampire winced in pain and just as quickly let go."At that time I just couldn't see how anyone could match up those two! Aggravatingly when I began to read Spander I never found the fic that quote was from. Either Ms Saxey made it up or just didn't list the fic and its author to protect the author. The irony is that I never really liked Xander until the fanfic authors pointed out his good qualities. Now my OTP is Spander mainly because they are usually depicted as equals, 2 bois having fun, helping each other against a world that has been harsh to both of them.

The first fanfics I read were on websites. I became an e-mail penpal of [livejournal.com profile] edibbea, the author of the fabulous Secrets series who convinced me to join Excessant and m-mSlashaholics. Later ljs became the popular way of posting fics so I began to read fics there and now I even have an lj of my own *still feels odd*.

One last thing--it seems to me as if there were two BtVS series, the one on the WB and the one on UPN and the characters on the later shows are OoC from the "original" series.
