More Xmas Stuff
To take the taste of sparkly shit out of my mouth (so to speak) I want to list the worthwhile charities I've found this year (I did a similar post either last Xmas or the year before). My ambition in life is to some day become a philanthropist which is much nicer that shitting sparkly stuff. There's:
Changing the Present where you can specify which need you'd like to fulfill
Firstbook - to give children from low income families the opportunity to to read and own their first new books
Camel Book Drive - somewhere in Africa book lending is done by bringing them to isolated villages on camels
Kiva.org which lets you make a microloan to an entrepreneur somewhere in the world empowering them to lift themselves out of poverty. Your loan is repaid and you can then make another - it's the gift that keeps on giving
Modest Needs - here in LJ we often read about flist friends who need a bit of help to tide them over some hurdle; this is similar on a nationwide scale
FINCA - another microloan organization whose clients are 70% women; Natalie Portman is the spokeswoman
My own favorite is for my flist friend
simplykimberlywho takes in feral kittens and gentles them while finding forever homes for them. Currently her adorable charge Roo is in the hospital where unfortunately the prognosis is not very good. He needs all the help he can get.
On a lighter note there's Nora, the piano-playing cat. Nora clearly gets that hitting the key results in a note sounded - I wonder how much she understands about human music. I bet she'd like to be able to play some Catmas Carols *g*
And finally as a respite from the Xmas angst go shoot some bubbles at Bubble Shooter.
ETA: Roo went gently into that good night earlier this evening. Rest in peace, little one.
