According to this GeoCities, a free Web hosting service that achieved fame in the mid-90s, died Thursday at the Yahoo headquarters in Silicon Valley. GeoCities was 15 years old.

 

GeoCities had suffered a long and drawn-out battle with its health over the past decade. An antiquated service model and outdated technology are widely blamed for the struggle. An official cause of death, however, has yet to be determined....GeoCities site is expected to remain functional through midyear as a tribute to its life. Funeral arrangements are now pending.

Many of the early BtVS fics were posted on geocities sites. I don't know what will happen to the geocities websites but if you have any favorite fics that are only found on such a website I suggest you start saving toot sweet. There are a bunch on BtVSSlash that I liked and Jameschick's site and Kizmet and Windzweaver and...

I'm actually quite sad to hear this. I have fond memories of GeoCities from way, way back when I first used the 'net in a fandom capacity and later when I wanted to make websites with free or very cheap webspace. I have fond memories of all the fandom mailing lists - back then there very few Buffy and/or Angel websites hosting fiction and I used to trawl for hours looking for new stories and other like-minded fans.

I know. I used to spend hours going from link to link looking for good stories. Oh the good old days.

I just worry about what will happen to those fanfic sites with all the older fics that established so much of what has become fanon. They deserve to be preserved somehow.

All these sites disappearing sadly yet my site which I want to delete I simply can't get rid of! It's driving me daft trying to get into it. It needs deleting badly, all the pics are gone and replaced with red crosses, it's neither use nor ornament and yet there it is...forever it seems! Agh.

I've not been on a geocities site for an age. They did annoy me a bit back in the day with that long advert that always got in the way but I do remember good times too. I feel all nostalgic. :(
