janedavitt, Xander first encounters Spike when he was possessed by the hyena spirit in S1. They meet over one of Spike's kills and the scent of blood attracts Xander, or should I say the hyena, to Spike and they share the victim. Later they indulge in beautiful animalistic sex until misunderstandings arise and they separate. But even when he's no longer possessed (or so he thinks) Xander remembers and is still attracted to Spike. Spike gives Xander a potion that will make him forget the past few days (including the feeding) but Xander doesn't drink it. Later, not knowing that Spike did drink it, he is bewildered in the finale when, in that scene in "School Hard", Spike doesn't recognize him. One of the first fics I came across that made me think there might be more to the hyena possession than ME realized or led us to believe.
The sequel Preying on My Mind begins two years later when the now chipped Spike is foisted on Xander who tells him the story of their first encounter and they resume their relationship. Giles finds out and then must help Spike free Xander from the hyena spirit that still dwells within him. Jane Davitt is one of the more accomplished writers in fandom. She captures all three of them so beautifully and the word pictures she creates are incredible: "Xander woke with his dreams rolling away like jewel coloured marbles dropped from a bag, vanishing in the dusty corners of his mind."and "Xander didn’t move, didn’t say a word, but Spike felt the air between them turn to syrup, sweet and heavy." All in all a wonderful pair of complimentary stories.
