Way back in October '07 I wrote a post with a link to a cockatoo dancing to the Backstreet Boys. Here is one dancing to Ray Charles:

I recently caught the new "Red Dwarf" special on the internet and IMO it wasn't very special :(
I also caught up on the 6th and 7th episodes of "Law & Order:UK" which are the last to be shown until the fall. Both were rewrites of episodes of the original series (1.06 was based on "Heaven" and 1.07 was based on "Helpless") but done with a few small twists and again I must say that the British stiff upper lip has vanished - the last ep "Aleysha" was absolutely riveting and much better than the original.

Once more I found a long lost article on the web. Way back in 1997 I read an essay in the Smithsonian that so resonated with me that I never forgot it. I finally tracked it down again. May I present to you Think of all you'd miss if your reading skills weren't 'enhanced' by age by Frederica Mathewes-Green. LOL

Just came across the story of Jasmine, a rescue dog, who has become a surrogate mother for the 50th time. Her charges have included an 11-week-old roe deer fawn, five fox cubs, four badger cubs, 15 chicks, eight guinea pigs, two stray puppies and even 15 rabbits. Read about her here and here.

BTW Charisma Carpenter will be on tomorrow's CSI.

Way back on July 2nd of last year I posted a vid featuring Christian the lion. In 1971, the two owners and George Adamson (husband of the Born Free author - I thought I recognized him in the vid) wrote a book called A Lion Called Christian: The True Story of the Remarkable Bond between Two Friends and a Lion. Due to the popularity of the vid, the book has been revised and updated and the owners have recently posted The Final Farewell:

They don't know what happened to him but I like to think he had a full life and a lot of his descendants are still roaming Africa.

ETA: there's now a program about this on Animal Planet called "Christian the Lion" - check it out

I'd like to wish a Happy New Year to all and may 2009 be a great year for everyone.

Here is a sweet New Year's prezzie from I Can Has Cheezburger:

Here is one for the cat lovers out there:

Anyone have a cat? Here are Guidelines for Cats written from a cat's POV. LOL

Now for us humans:

Tired of the same 4-letter words bandied about? Well impress and bewilder everyone with these 10 Insulting Words. Ninnyhammer I've seen used in historical novels and #8 is definitely not PC.

Are you getting hungry just sitting there by the computer but don't want to take too long to get a snack? Here's a recipe for Cake in a Mug.

Finally there's a study which reveals how to add 14 years to your life. I already try to do most of them but of course no matter how well I take care of myself I could be hit by a truck or have a crane fall on me and squash me flat  but I am trying.

The internet is such a wonderful place for animal lovers such as me and recently I've come across a bushel of great videos. Most of us think that cats are intelligent and looking at these tapes makes a strong argument for that. First we hear a Siamese named Alaska arguing with her "mom". Then there are these two voluble kitties possibly talking over their plans to conquer the Earth or maybe not *g* Cats also like their own versions of amusement park rides like this. LOL

Over in England at the ZSL London Zoo a star has been born named Conchita. She's the cutest little white-naped mangabey monkey baby. Follow the links there to watch her Diaries, a series of videos featuring this tiny cutie.

They say that sites like Cute Overload are getting more visitor than porn sites and I certainly can see why - we all need a daily smile and a laugh.

Finally go take a look at The Amazing Colour Changing Card Trick and see how observant you are. There's more like it at the main website Quirkology.

BTW The third and final part of my adventures at PAAWS this summer has been posted at The Way of Cats. Check it out.

Here's a cute story from today's New York Times. It seems that Hurricane Ike struck at the height of the squirrel birthing season in Texas so many young orphaned squirrels are being found and tended by volunteers at the SPCA. I love stories where humans act kindly and responsibly to their fellow creatures - why can't we do that all the time?

BTW I was looking through my links and I noticed that [livejournal.com profile] sajinn, author of one of my favorite fics "Waffle House" and many other classics like "Better Living Through Chemistry" and "The Soft Insanity of Time" hasn't updated since March 27, 2006 when she posted part 104 of "Night of Nights" (with apparently 145 parts planned). Does anyone know what's happening with her?

Went to the dentist for part deux of my root canal (he put in the posts and made a mold for the crown). My mouth aches - I'm not really in pain but it aches :(

OTH I came across this wonderful story of Buddy, an asistance dog trained to call 911! I love stories like this *g*

I just came across this vid of Cat House on the Kings, a cat (and dog) sanctuary in California. Check it out and spread the word.

Many posts ago i wrote about Free Rice where, when you answer vocabulary questions correctly, you in effect donate rice to the hungry. Now a twelve-year old girl (!!!) named Mimi Ausland has set up a site to donate free kibble to hungry cats by answering a daily trivia question at FreeKibbleKat (there's a place for dog lovers there too). Heck I think I was still playing with dolls when I was twelve. This younger generation is scary *g*

I came across a post titled Foreign Policy As Practiced By Seven Year Old Children. The sad irony is that the children will mature while Dubya and his cronies will remain in perpetual adolescence especially in regard to leaving a mess for others to clean up.

To balance this I offer
this vid of (fur) persons getting along - as the guy asks "Why can't we get along?"

A friend showed me the most heart-warming story of a mother duck who, when her ducklings were trapped, did the Lassie/Timmy's-in-the-well bit and got a policeman to help her rescue her brood. I can just imagine the desperation that made the little bird-brain approach a possible predator for help (read about it here).

This just in: An eagle ray jumped in a boat and stabbed a woman with its barb, killing her and dying from being trapped on the boat (read about it here). This of course brings to mind Steve Irwin's death-by-ray a couple of years ago. I never realized how dangerous they were as my only acquaintance with rays came from watching the characters of "Flipper" swim with them.

On a lighter note there's a bobcat named Ginger who taught herself to use the toilet (does she flush?) and has become a YouTube star. See it here.
shakatany: Sleeping woman plus moon and stars (animal lover)
Came across this cute story of a dolphin named Moko guiding two pygmy sperm whales to the sea to stop them from beaching themselves again. I love stories like this *g*

Well I'm back in NYC another year older and maybe a smidgen wiser *g*

The carrot cake we made for my birthday was delicious except if we hadn't tasted the frosting while we were making it, the frosting would've been a disaster. We were using a Carrot Cake recipe from Martha Stewart and one for her Cream Cheese Frosting when we found that that recipe called for 2 pounds of confectioners sugar (!!.) Now maybe that is the correct amount but we thought the frosting was sweet enough with just about one cup of sugar. Now either we have strange tastes or somebody goofed.

During my trip I wore my new boots with the 2" heels and found them to be very comfortable but I would/could never wear the truly high heels especially after reading this.

Have you heard the story about Oscar and Arthur? Oscar the dog so loved his cat friend Arthur that when Arthur died and was buried he dug him up again and brought him back into the house which sort of reminded me of the "zombie" cat in the BtVS ep "Dead Man's Party".

Another strange, but sweet, animal tale is that of Louis, the giant Pacific octopus, who has developed a liking for a Mr Potato Head figure given to him to keep him intellectually stimulated which is a big trend in zoos and aquariums these days.

Here's a rather bizarre story of two people who married each other only to find they were actually twins who had been separated when they were adopted. With sperm and egg donations and other variations now existing who knows how many people unknowingly marry their kin (probably not that many but still...)

Well "Without a Trace" wasn't on last night with or without James Marsters :( However I did catch Amy Acker in "Law & Order: Criminal Intent" and like JM in "Saving Grace" she was the murderer - is this a trend? She also said to one of the detectives "You'll never make Senior Partner" and that just cracked me up. I wonder if she had a flashback to "Angel"?

There's an ad for V-8 that's been on the air for sometime that really irks me. A mother is eating a french fry and is TAUNTING her toddler saying something like "Look what I have" in a nyah, nyah sort of voice. Would any sane mother do that? I think the ad was written and approved by bachelors who think it's cute :(

For fun go see the amazing Dancing Cockatoo - he's really got rhythm *g*
