In the mornings I generally watch the Weather Channel. One of the ads playing is for Head On for which the narrator repeats "Apply directly to the forehead", over and over. Now I suspect it has something to do with being a headache remedy (?) and if anything more was said they'd be in trouble with the FDA or FCC etc. but are we so mindless that we are expected to go buy it and put it on our foreheads without a good reason?
Another commercial is for Enzyte - Natural Male Enhancement featuring this dweebish guy right out of those 98 pound weakling ads. The first time I saw it I kept waiting for the punchline thinking it might be an ad for SNL or some other satirical show but no they were serious. Try explaining that ad to your child (if you have one) at 9 in the morning.
How come every time I see the ad for Neosporin I keep thinking of "Bewitched"? Could it have something to do with the music? The ad makers are really trying to hook us with nostalgia.

In my spam folder I have these subject headings:
Re: with fufey - I prefer without fufey
test eog - I don't want to test eog
my xozau - is that a Chinese form of endearment?
Re: cixig - I think the writer needs a good spellcheck
tewuh good - I'm so happy it's not bad
xoiop good - sounds like a noise made by R2-D2
Who are these idiots who make it worthwhile for the spammers?

Every once in a while I come across a product that actually delivers. For the past 5 years my nails have been splitting like crazy - even though I could never make a living hand-modelling they were usually presentable prior to this. I tried numerous products and though a few helped somewhat it wasn't until I used Sally Hanson's Miracle Cure For Severe Problem nails that I and my nails are again happy with each other. Now all I have to worry about is that SH keeps on making it.

Well I've come across a very interesting lj-er by the name of  [personal profile] researchgrrrl, an archaeologist who wrote of one of her hilarious adventures here - think "Snakes on a Plane" taking place in the wee hours in a sleazy motel. She also wrote a very snarky post on the attitudes of the Romans re the Christians:

Basically, the Romans in general were all about absorbing cool bits from the people they conquered. They loved adding new gods and pantheons to their own beliefs. LOVED it. And, really, for the most part, they were totally cool about letting folks continue to practice their religion so long as those folks also acknowledged the godhood of the Emperor. Well, as it happened, the members of the newly-formed Christian religion were all, "There's only one God. And he's SO not the Emperor! We'll DIE before we acknowledge the Emperor as a god! DIE, do you hear?" And the Romans were pretty much, like, "Huh. All right. Since you insist." (read more here). LOL.

ETA: She's also a great fan of "Supernatural" and has written some marvelous SPN fics.
ETA 2: She also has a link to [profile] dear_dean, an lj community that's an advice column by "Dean Winchester" *g*

For Proust it was madeleines that sent him into a journey through his memories; for me it was a bathing suit. On the cover of this week's New York magazine is a photo of Woody Allen and Scarlett Johansson wearing a 50's bathing suit with cherries on it very similar to one my mother had. Until I saw that photo I had forgotten that suit but the memories of it are still there in the compost heap that is part of my brain. That and the hot weather triggered a string of memories of the times she wore it at Brighton Beach and the days we spent there when I was young. I can still recall the taste of the fudge candies I would buy in the subway station for the trip there and occasionally I'll dream of when the tide would come in and we'd have to drag our belongings further inland. I'm particularly susceptible to such prompts now as July 5th is the anniversary of her death when I was 15. It's strange that memories from our youth stick with us the best - I can barely recall what I did last week.
