I live in mid-town Manhattan near a police station and a fire station and that morning I recall hearing a lot of sirens and hoping that a nearby synagogue wasn't on fire again (accidentally caused by someone working to renovate the building) which was the last time I heard so many sirens. The (radio)alarm went off and they were talking about a plane crashing into one of the Towers which once happened to the Empire State Building back in the 40s so I wasn't too worried. As I got out of bed they announced that another plane had crashed into the second Tower and I knew the world had changed forever. Before 9/11 I had hope that the century of wars was over and that humanity might get past such stupidity. Now all I can hope for is that all this will not escalate into WW III. I weep for my planet.

I wrote this in a comment in someone's lj but decided to make it my post as there's not much to add and I feel too empty to work on it:
