Washoe RIP + More
Nov. 1st, 2007 05:32 pmWashoe, the first chimpanzee to be taught sign language, died Tuesday night at the age of 42. In learning to use a human language she blurred the boundaries between humans and the animal kingdom, later further blurred by the discovery that chimps and other animals also use tools. And like some human females, she apparently had a thing for shoes *g*
Joss Whedon and Eliza Dushku are teaming up and returning to television with a 7-episode show called Dollhouse. It doesn't exactly sound like my cup of tea but I'm willing to give it a try.
Do you live in a danger zone threatened with wildfires or earthquakes or hurricanes? I came across this blog Making Light which tells you what you reasonably should have handy just in case.
Have you heard of Momspit? It's a no-rinse cleaner supposedly inspired by the original. I would have loved to have been a fly on the wall when someone thought this up and tried to convince others that it was a good name for the product.
I read Of Marx, Christ and the Persecution of Radicals: How Will Humanity Survive the Capitalist Threat? by Jason Miller last summer and bookmarked it. I finally remembered I'd done so today *headdesk* The author writes Capitalism is a cancer upon the sentient beings of the Earth and we are suffering through its advanced stages. No one has ever achieved true communism, which is now such a loaded word, anywhere in the world. The regimes labelled communist were stuck in the second stage of state-run communism. I'm not sure pure communism is workable but neither is the plutocracy we have going right now - a government run by and for the rich and powerful and intended to be kept that way by making any mention of communism or socialism eg socialized medicine an anathema. We are plundering the planet, possibly polluting it beyond repair, all in the name of the almighty dollar. One day we, or our children, will pay a heavy price for our shortsightedness.
