Cat Sites

In my wanderings I came across a couple of sites where people have posted photos of their cats. They are:

Stuff on My Cat - some are cute and caught in the act while others are posed and probably humoring their humans.
Hitler Cats - a collection of cats with little black marks under their noses. As I recall Hitler was a dog person so it would serve him right if he came back as a cat.

The abundance of stuff on the web is incredible. There once was an ad where this guy is at his computer and the computer says something like "Congratulations you have reached the end of the internet." There is no end (short of the end of the world) as just when you've perused what you think is the last page other users post new entries, fics, comments, news items etc. It's the cyber version of crystal formation.

I've come across two interesting ljers. One is [profile] ursulav who writes extremely funny posts often about her adventures in gardening which is really a foreign world to a city-dweller like me. The other is [personal profile] simplykimberly who has kittens!! Lots of cute kittens and the sad but heart-warming tale of Micro-kitty. As a catless ailurophile I'm in 7th heaven as I'm vicariously getting my feline fix.

HAPPY LITHA (the first day of summer) to all - is Yule (the first day of winter) being celebrated in the Southern Hemisphere (inquiring minds want to know)?

I took the advice of [profile] sexymermaid and made a shakatany account at Greatest Journal just in case the teenyboppers take over LJ completely. The nice thing is that I get 2000 free icons - [personal profile] lit_gal here I come.

This is for [profile] belleimani *grin*: There's this wonderful story about Belle who called 911 to save her friend who was in a diabetic coma - the catch is that Belle is a beagle!! Read about it here.

My subject title can be found here. It's a list of wonderful fictional expletives at Wikipedia. Check them out.

On a little more serious note I found these two links for people interested in English grammer and language: Language Log and Eggcorns

And last of all if anyone needs a MozillaFirefox Cheatsheet go here.

Remember those reality shows where a bunch of people share living quarters and are slowly voted off? Well now Meow Mix has created Meow Mix House, a feline version airing on the Animal Planet. There are 10 cats from animal shelters and eventually one will become the MM cat while the others are adopted. I know it's really one glorified commercial but it's so purrfidiously cute.

Kiwi!!

Came across this today:
"A kiwi hatched on February 13, 2006, at the National Zoo. Few kiwis hatch outside of their native New Zealand, the first having occurred here in 1975. That bird is still on exhibit at the Bird House.
The baby kiwi is named Manaia (pronounced 'Mah nye uh'
), a Maori (native peoples of New Zealand) word meaning 'Guardian of the earth and sky'." To see the cuteness of the little bird (she reminds me of Jeremy from "The Yellow Submarine *g*) go here. Also check out the Kiwi Chick Cam (though sometimes there's not much to see).

In Greenwich Village, Molly, an eleven-month old cat, was rescued from the crawlspace where she'd been trapped for about 2 weeks (read more here). At times like these I just love humanity.

CHUM, a Canadian media conglomerate, is making a TV series called "Blood Ties" from Tanya Huff's Blood novels featuring Vicky Nelson, a private investigator and Henry Fitzroy, vampire and bastard son of Henry VIII (read more here). I have read and enjoyed the books and what intrigues me is that like Chelsea Quinn Yarbro's Comte de Saint-Germain, Henry Fitzroy actually existed and suffered from a mysterious end. I can just imagine other writers who would like an historical vampire scouring history books and googling for the perfect person to be "vampired" *g*.

I'm doing some more web-surfing and I came across this site with a videoclip of a panda "kindergarten" that the Research Centre for Panda Protection has established in China. See here. They're sooo cute *g*

There's a photographer named Gregory Colbert who has a show called Ashes & Snow with the most gorgeous photos of encounters between humans and animals. Take a look.

Anyone out there with an aquarium? There's a Fish School where someone has figured out a way to train goldfish, bettas and albino Oscars to do simple tricks. The only pets I ever had were a couple of goldfish that quickly departed to that aquarium in the sky (actually they were flushed down the toilet). I might have been more devastated if I'd known I could actually do something with them.

Well I've been web-surfing and I found 2 sites with "Lost" timelines: here and here. They do help make sense of all the important trivia floating about.

With Tom Cruise and his Church so much in the news I found this very interesting site Operation Clambake: Undresssing the Church of Scientology Since 1996 and its very funny Scientology Illustrated. Is it just me or are there an awful lot of gullible people out there?

Sweet piccies of a baby monkey and stray kitten are to be found here

I just came across Cute Overload with a bounty of photos of cuddly hamsters, kittens, puppies and other adorable animals.

Came across another story of cross-species affection. In the LA Zoo there's Willy, a 10-year-old, 187-pound hog who lost his mate and is now enamored of a 16-year-old bongo named Nicole. Read about it here.

Just gakked this lj from [livejournal.com profile] dolnmoon. It's [livejournal.com profile] ted_the_cat another feline POV lj--how may are there out there? Any dogs? horses? wombats?

My friend made this comment on Rufus aka Ch. Rocky Top's Sundance Kid, the colored bull terrier who won the 130th annual Westminster Kennel Club Dog Show last night (here). She said that "Rufus looks like his head was formed in a bottle, the way that you can form squash if you place them in a container when they're small & they grow to the shape of the container." Lol. The things we do to to our best friend *sigh*.

She also told me about this website for The Elephant Sanctuary in Tennessee "that has many rescued zoo & circus elephants [now} living in a very large area, with woods & fields & ponds. They have a lot of dogs & cats that roam around among the elephants, and one of the dogs is the best friend of one of the elephants. And another elephant carries a large tire around with her as a security blanket." You can watch them on livecam--sort of like peeking in on a pachyderm soap opera. I read that the Bronx Zoo will close its elephant exhibit if one or two of its three elephnts die. Maybe they'll send the survivor(s) to live out its/their days in relative freedom there.

If anyone out there is interested in volcanoes there's the Alaska Volcano Observatory that let's you find out what's happening with Augustine, the volcano that's erupting in the Cook Inlet there. I find what's available on the internet so absolutely fascinating.

Once upon a time The Gordons wrote a book called Undercover Cat that Walt Disney turned into the original "That Darn Cat" with Hayley Mills. Now truth has copied art with a real "undercover cat" *g*. Read about it here.

As I was channel-hopping on TV last night I came across the last bit of a story about a puppy and a lioncub. I decided to google this morning and found the story of Koza and Cairo here. Apparently it's not a unique tale--see here and here.

As I've written in earlier posts I just love these kinds of stories *g*.

I've been reading about Gohan and Aochan (here). Aochan is a 4-foot long rat snake and Gohan is a hamster who was placed in the snake's cage to be it's next meal. The snake decided not to eat the hamster and they have shared the cage ever since. A friend has a 5-foot long corn snake (close relative to the rat snake) and I cynically think that the hamster is simply too big for it to eat--at the moment. One day there may be a follow up announcement of Gohan's demise at the jaws of the snake. On the other hand I hope it's true, that it's a case of cross-species friendship--I love such stories whether it's hamster/snake, hippo/tortoise or human/vampire *g*

A very sweet fic is being written by [livejournal.com profile] spikes_heart and [livejournal.com profile] liliaeth. It's called Heartsongs. It's post-NFA and Spike has shanshued and become a human child growing up as Angel and Nina's adopted son. A lot of characters from both series are present. There's some plot and angst and schmoop and great writing. Check it out.

Cat Stuff

Today seems to be a day of cat news. Have you heard about the cat that saved his human by dialling 911? You can read/see it here. Mr Rosheisen tried to train Tommy to do just that but you never know if a cat will do what you want him to do when you want him to do it. There's actually a Moscow Cats Theatre where a Mr Kuklachev has trained many cats to perform for almost 30 years. He must be a man with an extraordinary amount of patience.

In fanfiction:
There's Hepcat/[livejournal.com profile] nwhepcat's fascinating Xander-in-Africa story called These Songs of Freedon.
Plus [livejournal.com profile] entrenous88 has this sweet Spander + Odo the kitten fic called Cuddly Predators.
Finally Tabaqui has begun another of her Variations on a Theme of Spander called As If We Should Forget We Have No Hands. Why would I include her in a post about cats? Well her website is at catbones.com (yeah I know I'm reaching but it's my lj).

Owen & Mzee

One of my cousins and I went to the New England Mobile Book Fair which is this humongous discount bookstore in the area to buy a couple of birthday presents for me. We saw this adorable children's book about Owen the baby hippopotamus orphaned by the tsunami and Mzee the tortoise who befriended him. It was such a sweet book that when we returned to my cousin's house I googled and found a couple of links: an e-book Owen & Mzee and a website of Lafarge Eco Systems, the park they're living in . I just love heart-warming stories like this. Check it out.

If there are any ailurophiles out there go to Rate My Kitten. There are also links to "Rate My Puppy" and "Rate My Bunny". Be careful--you may suffer from an overdose of cuteness *g*

On Friday nights I often watch a couple of Britcoms Keeping Up Appearances and As Time Goes By on PBS. The former features Hyacinth Bucket (she pronounces it Boo kay) as an infuriatingly pretentious social climber. I sit there picturing a postscript story where her husband Richard will finally break and strangle her and all the people he used to work with will say "But he was such a quiet man" and wonder what drove him to do it while all those who knew the couple would wonder how he was able to restrain himself for so long. Ideally Hetty Wainthropp would investigate with her Hobbit. BTW anyone else think think that Geoffrey Shawcross might have changed his name to Charlie Pace?
I adore "As Time Goes By" which stars Dame Judy Dench and a cast of actors who look amazingly like real people. It's a sweet little series made up of moments in the lives of these endearing characters focusing on a couple in their 60s and their relatives, none under 30 and some actually over 80.
I believe that unlike "Till Death Do Us Part" which became "All in the Family" and "Steptoe and Son" which became "Sanford and Son" these shows are untranslatable just like "Absolutely Fabulous" (I hear that Roseanne bought the rights years ago and to this day there's no sign of an American version). American shows tend to focus on the young and/or gorgeous so it's refreshing to see something a bit closer to reality.

If you're in a quirky mood go to the ljs of [livejournal.com profile] miroza_cat (The City Journal of an Irish Cat) written from a cat's POV and her apprentice [livejournal.com profile] shandri_cat.
