My Finds

shakatany: Sleeping woman plus moon and stars (Cool Neroon)
I've spent the past few hours web-surfing and thought I'd share my finds in case others out there need a laugh now that the workweek's begun after the long weekend.

I was over at Gregory K. Pincus' blog to check out what's new in the realm of Fibs and read his "About Me" description where he writes : "Long ago I was also an amateur crastinator, but I have long since moved to the pro ranks."        C'est moi *g*

The World's Coolest Animals where it is written that "No one has ever survived an attack by a koala... usually, after they pelt you senseless with Eucalyptis nuts, they drop from the branches of their tree with their awful fangs bared, screaming at the top of their lungs. They grab the face of their victim and basically tear him or her to bits. The only known method for avoiding a koala attack is to stay at home, inside, under the bed (with the lights off, of course) at ALL times. If you are attacked, scream "TIGER SNAKE" and fall to the ground. Sometimes, this tricks the koala into thinking it is about to be on TV. Koalas hate being on tv, so this might buy you enough time to get away."   Lol

I just realized I haven't posted a review since January. I think I've had a block because I've been debating with myself if I should actually rec these as they appear to have been abandoned by their creators with only a very small chance of their ever being completed. However they are so very memorable that I decided to post them and let people decide whether they wish to succumb to their allure. You have been warned *g*

Grungefic by [personal profile] darkhavens: an original, gritty story set in S1 where a sad Xander, mourning Jesse's death, runs into Spike, who has yet to visit Sunnydale. Even feral Spike is attracted to Xander.

Secrets by [profile] edibbea: Spike gives Xander exactly what he needs - D/s. Apparently RL has become difficult for Edibbea so apart from the occasional beta-ing she's no longer active in fandom.

"The Witch, the Warrior and the Vampire" (here and here) by [profile] brandil. This is a multi-character fic which is why I think she decided to abandon it as it was growing too complex. It begins as a Spuffy fic but then takes a strange turn into S/X as Spike is forced to become the sire of a newly married Xander. I just love this core story within the larger story as Spike, Buffy, Xander and Anya must learn to deal with the new situation and Spike is torn between his Childe and Buffy. I wish she'd re-start the fic, simply concentrating on the four, ignoring the rest.

Xanpet by [profile] siegelit is one of my most most guilty pleasures. Xander and Spike are somehow sent back in time to 1889 and Xander is forced to become Spike's pet in the house of Angelus. Alone in a strange time and country (France), dependent on the vampires, he must learn to accept his place in this very graphic D/s fic. After a long hiatus from fandom, Siege has recently re-emerged and hinted that she might continue with it.

Finally there's [profile] ladycat777's fabulous Hunt-Brother. This is a difficult review to write as I've been slammed for voicing my dismay that it may remain forever unfinished (this according to the author). I came across this fic in my early Spander days when Ladycat was still writing it (I believe it was her first fic). It was one of the first stories I encountered where Xander's father was an abusive SOB--maybe that's why it had such a tremendous impact on me. It also was the first fic I read to make use of the hyena possession from "The Pack" (BtVS ep 1.6). It begins in S4 when events force Xander to vamp-sit Spike in the Basement of Doom. Spike notices that there are times that Xander zones out and he can make the Scoobie obey him as he regresses to a little boy who needs approval. Realizing that there is something wrong with Xander, Spike decides to claim Xander, marking Xander as his. Spike's growing concern for his boi becomes evident when Xander's parents go too far and he is badly injured. Xander was on the road to recovery when Ladycat stopped but the bois were on the outs and there are many unanswered questions. Ladycat has a great imagination and is extremely talented at creating vivid characters and scenes that immediately grab you and stay with you. If she wasn't so talented I would've forgotten the fics by now as I have so many other abandoned fics.

[profile] wen_spencer, one of my favorite SF writers, once wrote,  "Writing is foremost STORYTELLING and if you don't tell a complete story, you're not writing. You're putting words on paper."  (it's my lj and I can be grumpy)

shakatany: Sleeping woman plus moon and stars (Spock)
In 1926, Hugo Gernsback gave name to science fiction (well actually he called it scientifiction but the fans protested and it soon became the name we now know). Almost right away fans started writing their own fics and many of them like Judith Merrill, Isaac Asimov and Frederick Pohl (who still is writing) became professionals. This trend--fan to pro--is still with us today.
In 1967 "Star Trek" became the first show to have it's fans publish fics inspired by it. One of the early ones was Jacqueling Lichtenberg who, with Kraith, was possibly the first to establish her own AU, complete with a story arc, wherein Kirk, for many reasons, is adopted into Spock's family. Another early writer was Jean Lorrah whose best known Trekfic was "Night of the Twin Moons" where Sarek and Amanda visited a planet ruled by women. Both writers later turned pro as I'm sure other Treklit writers also did.
In those days stories were printed in fanzines that relied on snailmail and waiting for a 'zine could be torture as the Post Awful Monster was known for it's sadistic tendencies and loved to delay, lose or chew up the 'zines. You youngsters are more fortunate. I've seen a new BtVS ep at night and the next day someone's written a story inspired by it. The one drawback is that no fanzine would publish an unfinished story and now there are countless unfinished, abandoned fics out there.
There are so many well-written fics out there where the author displays his/her awesome talents for description, plot and characterization that I wonder how many might eventually turn pro. Today I read a post by [livejournal.com profile] wen_spencer, one of my favorite SF writers, where she talks about writing and one of her points is "Writing is foremost STORYTELLING and if you don't tell a complete story, you're not writing. You're putting words on paper." Unfortunately there's a lot of that in fanfiction too.

Re John Vickery: "As well as having a voice that could melt the underwear off a cloistered nun at 50 paces, he's also one of the best received Shakespearean actors in the country." -- Janis

"If they told James Marsters that his new love interest was a cement block, he would have chemistry with the cement block. We would all be Spike/Cement Block shippers, and there would be a S/CB fic list, and whenever JM looked at the block just so, we would all post things like, "Whoa, Cement Block looked hot tonight." -- Amy

So true, so true. I especially love that bit about the cloistered nun *g*

I was re-reading "To the Hilt" by Dick Francis earlier and I came across this: "Some are born weird, some achieve it, others have weirdness thrust upon them." lol c'est moi. I miss that he's no longer writing--he's my favorite mystery writer.

I was reading [livejournal.com profile] nandibble's latest chapter of "Blood Price" when I came across this quote "the still center of the turning world" (Donne, Wordsworth, Elliot??). I just thought the imagery it invoked was so lovely. I collect quotes that are meaningful to me but I've been doing it for years and it's rare to find something new these days. I'm getting jaded *sigh*
