Came across this today:
"A kiwi hatched on February 13, 2006, at the National Zoo. Few kiwis hatch outside of their native New Zealand, the first having occurred here in 1975. That bird is still on exhibit at the Bird House.
The baby kiwi is named Manaia (pronounced 'Mah nye uh'
), a Maori (native peoples of New Zealand) word meaning 'Guardian of the earth and sky'." To see the cuteness of the little bird (she reminds me of Jeremy from "The Yellow Submarine *g*) go here. Also check out the Kiwi Chick Cam (though sometimes there's not much to see).
