Holiday Goings On

On Friday I went to see "Marley & Me" which I think is the only movie saw in 2008. I never read the book so I have no idea how closely the movie follows its source. I'm not a fan of Owen Wilson with that pouty mouth and I thought it funny that he and Jennifer have practically the same hair color so they almost looked like brother and sister instead of husband and wife. They take this "worst" dog to only one dog trainer played by a barely recognizable Kathleen Turner - I have no idea if they tried more in the book - but I thought if they gave up with the first one they basically deserved this unruly dog who clearly knew that neither owner was the alpha-type and therefor listened to neither. The moviemakers ought to be brought up on false advertising charges as the ads make it look like a delightful doggy romp of a movie whereas it was much more about Owen's character and his problems like should he accept the better salary as a columnist or remain a poor reporter in the reporter pool? What a dilemma! All in all a very blah movie.
On Monday I went ice skating at Wollman Skating Rink. When I was young my mother often took me there after school but I hadn't skated there in decades and have only skated once elsewhere in the intervening years. However ice skating is a lot like riding a bike - it all comes back and I easily got the hang of it again. I did fall once and it was a doozy - I was trying to avoid a collision and ended up flat on my back. My tailbone still isn't too happy with me but it was worth it. I'd forgotten how much I like skating. The city set up a rink in Bryant Park that's free (if you bring your own skates) so maybe one day I'll buy a pair and plan to go there once in a while.
I finally saw the "Doctor Who 2008 Christmas Special" and found it well written with all sorts of plot twists and of course well-acted by those beautifully trained British actors who tend to look like real people unlike so many Hollywood actors. David Tennant was the Doctor and will remain so for another 3 or 4 specials including the next one "Planet of the Dead' - yay!
