They're going to establish a sturch in Missouri!! Thanks to
tabaqui I just discovered that Missouri legislators seek to make Christianity the state religion believing the separation of church and state applies only to the Federal government. Many years ago I read a book by Robert Heinlein (considered by many to be the dean of SF writers of the 20th century) called If This Goes On which is set in the future, telling the story of a band of fighters rebelling against the theocracy that was America. I remember thinking how absurd the premise was but now I am not so sure *shivers*
I'm currently reading a book called Stealing Jesus: How Fundamentalism Betrays Christianity by Bruce Bawer which tells how what he calls the Church of Law, the premillennialists that make up the Christian right, actually believe in the inerrancy of the bible and believe that theirs is the only version of true Christianity. They await the time when Jesus will return, lifting the faithful in the rapture and letting the rest of us non-believers burn in hell. The book was written in 1997 and it's gotten so much worse now that they are infiltrating the government--these people are scary.
When you read about what the fundamentalists want, be they Xtians, Jews or Moslems, it often boils down to control of women and their sexuality. As a woman and a non-Christian (don't know exactly what I am--still seeking) these are frightening times as both the Christian right and the Moslem extremists seek to make their religion the dominant one worldwide. To learn about the Moslem side go see Annaqed (the Critic) to read what moderates think of their fundamentalists.
